Pin: How to Spot It Before It Lands
A pin is a straight-line tactic: a bishop, rook, or queen attacks a piece that cannot leave its square without exposing something more valuable standing behind it on the same line. When the piece behind is the king, the pin is absolute and moving the pinned piece is literally illegal. When the piece behind is anything else, usually the queen or a rook, the pin is relative: the pinned piece may legally move, it just costs material when it does. Only line pieces can pin. Knights, pawns, and kings never do.
The geometry to memorize is the classic bishop pin: Bg5 or Bb5 for White, Bg4 or Bb4 for Black, aimed at a knight on its natural development square with the queen or king lined up behind it. The spotting rule that transfers: every time a bishop or rook develops, trace its line all the way across the board. If that line passes through one of your pieces and continues on to your king or queen, the front piece is pinned or about to be. And the misjudgment runs both ways: treating a relative pin as absolute gets punished, because the "pinned" piece can sometimes move anyway with devastating effect, while trusting a pinned piece to defend gets punished harder, because its protection is a bluff.
Example 1: The classic bishop pin: the bishop on b5 pins the knight on c6 to the king on e8.
This is an absolute pin. Any knight move would expose the king on e8 to the bishop, so every knight move is illegal. The knight still stands on c6, but it no longer plays chess: it cannot capture, cannot cover a new square, cannot run. It is attacked with no defender, and it can do nothing about either fact.
With just these pieces the pin wins nothing yet, since taking on c6 only trades bishop for knight. The point is what the pin sets up. A frozen piece is a target that holds still, so every attacker you add is a real attacker while the defense is stuck reacting. This is why pinning a developed knight in the opening is worth a real fight: the pin does not win the knight outright, it takes the knight out of the game until the defender spends moves to break it.
Example 2: A pinned defender is no defender: the rook on e1 freezes the knight, so Bxg5 takes the pawn for free.
Count the defenders of g5 by geometry and the pawn looks safe: the knight on e6 covers it. Count them by the rules and it is not defended at all. The knight is absolutely pinned to the king on e8 by the rook on e1, which makes Nxg5 an illegal move. White plays Bxg5 and Black cannot recapture.
This is the most common way pins actually win material in real games: not by capturing the pinned piece, but by taking whatever it pretended to guard. Before you trust a defender, yours or theirs, trace the line behind it and check whether a king or queen turns its defense into a bluff. Whole combinations begin with exactly that question.
How Square One trains the pin
Square One does not prescribe pin drills to everyone. It watches your own games for the specific way pins hurt you, whether you walk into them or trust pinned defenders that were never really defending, and only then builds targeted packs from positions slightly above your rating around that exact leak. - What is the difference between an absolute pin and a relative pin?
- An absolute pin has the king behind the pinned piece, so moving it is illegal. A relative pin has a queen, rook, or another valuable piece behind, so moving is legal but usually loses material. The gap matters in practice: a relatively pinned piece can still move when the tactics justify it, and assuming it cannot is how classic traps like the Legal mate work.
- Can a pinned piece still give check?
- Yes. Even an absolutely pinned piece keeps attacking its squares, and the rules never require that an attack be a legal capture for it to count as check. A completely pinned piece can deliver check and even checkmate.
- How do you get out of a pin?
- Four honest options: challenge or capture the pinning piece, block the line with a cheaper piece, step the valuable piece off the line behind, or break the pin with tempo by attacking the pinner. In the classic Bg5 pin, moves like h6 and Be7 exist precisely for this job.
- Why is a pinned piece a bad defender?
- Because its recapture is either illegal, in an absolute pin, or punishable, in a relative one. Anything guarded only by a pinned piece is in practice guarded by nobody, which is why strong players attack the things a pinned piece defends rather than the pinned piece itself.
