DecodeChess in 2026: Still Alive, What It Costs, and What Replaced It

Every claim about DecodeChess in this piece comes from pages we personally loaded on August 13, 2026, and each one is dated. Where we could not verify something, we say so instead of guessing.

Is DecodeChess still alive in 2026?

Short answer: online, selling subscriptions, and by every visible signal unmaintained. Here is exactly what we found when we checked on August 13, 2026.

• ·The site is up and functional as of August 2026. decodechess.com loads, the pricing page works, and signup and checkout are live.
• ·The blog has been silent for over three years. The newest post, "New Feature: Decode Game Got Better," is dated April 2, 2023. The one before it announced a Chessify partnership on January 16, 2023.
• ·The footer on every page we loaded still reads "Copyright - Decodea LTD and DecodeChess 2022."
• ·The web app at app.decodechess.com loads its board and demo position, but on both of our visits in August 2026 it showed a "temporary connection problem" banner. That may have been a passing outage; we can only report what we saw.

To be fair, an unchanged product is not automatically a broken one, and the decode engine itself may still run fine for paying users. But if you are deciding where to put $84 a year, three years of silence from the team is information. We could not find any acquisition or shutdown announcement in either direction, so the honest description is a product left running, not a product being built.

What DecodeChess got genuinely right

Credit where it is due: DecodeChess saw the real problem years before anyone else. An engine tells you WHAT the best move is and a number for how good it is, and neither of those teaches a human anything. DecodeChess built explainable AI on top of Stockfish and answered in sentences: what the threats are, what plans the move supports, what job each piece is doing, which concepts the position turns on. The homepage still carries endorsements from GM Anish Giri and GM Boris Gelfand, and the pitch of serving players up to 2000 rating was exactly the right audience. As of August 2026 that framing has aged perfectly; it is the product around it that stood still.

The gap it never closed

Even at full health, DecodeChess was an analysis room, not a coach. You bring it a position, it explains that position beautifully, and then it forgets you exist. It has no memory that this is the fourth knight fork you have missed this month, no opinion about which of your recurring leaks costs the most rating, and no way to check whether a fix actually held in your next twenty games. That is the same structural limit we wrote about in Game Review vs a real coach: a per-position tool can never construct the one sentence that moves your rating, which is "you keep doing this specific thing."

Square One: the explain-the-why promise, kept alive

Square One is built on the same conviction DecodeChess started with, that plain language beats evaluation numbers, but it coaches you while you play instead of waiting in an analysis room. You play against human-like Maia bots or Stockfish, and when a move deserves attention the coach explains it in sentences that name actual pieces and squares: what you were trying to do, why it failed, what to look for next time. Every game feeds an improvement dashboard that tracks your recurring patterns across games and ranks them by what they cost you, which is exactly the layer DecodeChess never had.

The free tier is a real product: coached games against the bots on a weekly allowance, currently ten games a week, plus a free scouting report on your existing Chess.com or Lichess games with no signup.
